“Education in sync with the rhythms of each stage of childhood”

Teaching in mainstream schools I was frustrated with the disconnect between my child development studies and the reality of the classroom, where more often than not square pegs were forced into round holes. As a graduate student exploring different educational models, I had the opportunity to visit The Waldorf School of Philadelphia and was immediately struck by the idea of education in sync with the rhythms of each stage of childhood, working with (not against) the child’s imaginative capacity and the power of play, celebrating the natural world and the seasons, and respectful of the uniqueness of the individual. When it came to send my “square peg” to school, there was no question in my mind where that would be.
